The Large Magellanic Cloud

The Large Magellanic Cloud, the Milky Way's largest satellite galaxy, is classified as a barred-spiral. The bar and some of the spiral arms are visible in this photograph, as well as dozens of clusters and emission nebulae. A closer view is shown below.

Nikon 135mm lens at f2.8. Three five-minute exposures on gas-hypersensitized Kodak Pro 400 PPF color-negative film. The field is 9½° x 14¼° centered at 05h 24m, -68° 48'. North is up and to the right. Photographed from near Vicuña, Chile. ©1998

The LMC and the Tarantula Nebula

Numerous clusters and bright and dark nebulae are visible among the stars of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The Tarantula Nebula, NGC 2070, in the upper left is the largest emission nebula known, with a diameter of almost 800 light-years.

Astro-Physics 105mm (4.1 inch) refractor at f4.5. Three fourteen-minute exposures on gas-hypersensitized Kodak Pro 400 PPF color negative film. North is up and to the right. Photographed from near Vicuña, Chile. ©1998
